Pickaway County Local Work Group

In the spring of 2003 a local work group (LWG) was established to provide input to the county through the PSWCD for program direction and selection criteria of applications for the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP). This was a strong effort for locally led programming and control.

Using the LWG input and scoring criteria from the state level, Pickaway County was successful in getting six EQIP applications funded for a total of around $145,000.

The applications were scored according to resource concerns addressed, conservation practices to be installed, and locations of concern for wildlife or water quality by watershed or progress with meeting total maximum daily load (TMDL) plan. Selection was begun with the top score and continued with the next high score until the money was gone. Actually twice the state gave additional money to Pickaway County.

This winter the LWG will meet again to discuss the results of this past year and to refine input for future USDA programs as permitted and instructed.

The LWG is made up of elected officials and agency people.

Participants in the LWG are John Stevenson, County Commissioner; C. Randall Metzger, PSWCD Supervisor; Harvey Seitz, FSA County Committee Member; Robert Minshall, Pickaway Township Trustee; Ron Clifton, Muhlenberg Township Trustee; Jim Minor, Jackson Township Trustee; Don Lamb, FSA County Executive Director; Mike Estadt, OSU Extension County Agent; and Dan E. Garver, NRCS District Conservationist.
